Ad for Pacific Mail Line sailing. This site features mini-books and manuscripts of San Francisco stories written during the mid-1800s by journalists, travellers and family. Through text and images, you will learn what your ancestors found when they stepped ashore after months at sea.

It was a dramatic time, with thousands of people arriving daily from around the world. They were immediately surrounded by the cacophony of noise and mysterious aromas from San Francisco's streets. Their style of dress was a hodge-podge of styles from various countries, as was their language. English was peppered with words from Germany, Ireland, Spanish-speaking countries, Scandanavia, France, Italy, Chinese, and everywhere else around the globe.

As we come across interesting works, they will be made available. You will soon be able to find receipes, dress, articles from papers of the day, stories of shipwrecks, and tales of San Francisco's many characters, including religious leaders, visiting performing artists, etc. The eBooks will be sometimes amusing, sometimes serious, and all will be designed to give you a sense of place.

Please check back from time to time and watch the selection grow.
